Origins
Born in Russia, Barisbi Alborov was 35 years old in 2024-2025 when he publicly disclosed his identity at the Shanghai International Online Literature Week. His initial training was in classical philology — Ancient Greek, Latin, theology — but he chose game writing over teaching, working as a narrative designer for nearly nine years.
A last chance
His first novel failed, as he recounts himself: "My first novel failed terribly and I gave myself six months to see if I could earn enough to feed myself." He gave himself those six months on Webnovel — and published Shadow Slave in 2022. The project took off.
Shadow Slave
The work blends the cosmic horror of a dystopian apocalypse with the radiant beauty of a classical fantasy adventure. The author cites Chinese and Korean dramas, and science fiction, as influences. His game design experience shines through in the systemic world-building and the ritualistic rank progression (Sleeper, Awakened, Ascended, Transcendent, Supreme).
As of May 2026, Shadow Slave exceeds 2985 chapters, with a production rhythm of approximately 14 chapters per week. The series accumulates over 95 million views on Webnovel and more than 221 million views across all platforms combined.
Recognition
In December 2024, the author received the High Potential Overseas IP award at the 3rd Shanghai International Online Literature Week, as part of the Webnovel Spirity Awards. Will Wight, New York Times bestselling author of the Cradle series, called Shadow Slave "ONE OF MY FAVORITE NEW READS!".
